Description

Medical Information Officers often work within the commercial division of pharmaceutical companies where they have the responsibility to provide balanced, evaluated information (answers to 100 most frequent asked questions etc.) and advice on the clinical use of medicines to research professionals and patients. He/she makes use of various information systems and sources. The MIO gathers information about the most recent developments of drugs. The MIO can also be responsible for checking advertising and promotional material as well as having a role in monitoring drug safety through reporting adverse reactions to company products to the regulatory authorities.

Qualifications

Qualifications for a Medical Information Officer are usually (bio)medical, pharmacology, physiology or biochemistry degree or a pharmacist registration. He/she must be computer literate.

    • Communicates clearly with clients with good listening and questioning skills
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Approach issues from a number of perspectives, summarising data to draw a conclusion

Tasks

    • Research and report medical information to the medical and marketing & sales departments
    • Develop the Medical Information database and working practices
    • Answer medical and pharmaceutical questions from internal and external parties
    • Active support of various department by means of advice and information via relevant sources
    • Staying up to date with medical and pharmaceutical information
